IDUG 2008 – North America provided user-driven education and networking opportunities designed to fit the needs of DB2 database administrators on a Linux, Unix, or Windows platform. This year’s conference featured over 25 hours of technical sessions for IMS Technology, included:

IMS Special Interest Groups
Attendes teamed up with peers, shared best practices, learned from subject-matter experts, and brainstormed solutions around a specialized area of interest through Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The following SIGs were offered at the conference:
IMS V10 Migration IMS Version 10, GAed on October 26, 2006, delivers unsurpassed database and transaction processing availability and speed. Want to jump on the band wagon? Come to this SIG to pick up migration experiences from your peers and industry experts. If you have been there and done so, share the war stories and the answers you have found.
IMS HALDB and Recovery Unveiled with IMS Version 7, High Availability Large Database (HALDB) offers administrators greater availability, manageability and scalability. As databases are getting bigger and 24 x 7 becomes a norm, HALDB is your best bet. However, the amount of work it requires to convert could easily turn it into “HELLDB.” This SIG will provide you an opportunity to gain valuable insight into the tips, techniques and strategies used by industry experts and other conference attendees as they discuss and share their applied knowledge and recovery experiences.
Women in Technology (Cross Platform) More women are in all levels of technology fields and at all stages of their careers and lives. Whether you believe that there is gender inequality within the tech industry or not, whether you can efficiently juggle career and family or not, one underlying truth is that we should support each other. Come enjoy networking, connecting, learning and interacting with women in IDUG community and other women leaders, who prove that a woman can get job done.
Data Privacy, Security, and Audit Compliance (Cross Platform) Are you concerned about an upcoming audit or meeting security requirements? Databases have emerged as a critical business asset. SOX, HIPAA, Gramm-Leach-Bliley and FISMA acts have intensified data security awareness. Recent data breaches in news have amplified the concerns. Organizations not only struggle with safeguarding enterprise data, but with how they can reach compliance with their current resources and budgets. Come to share and learn from peers and experts to understand the mandates and effectively mitigate security risks.
Ask an IBM Developer?
On Thursday, May 22, attendees took advantage of the opportunity to have burning questions answered directly by leading IBM IMS developers. The following IBM developers were present for the panel:
- Ken Blackman, IBM Advanced Technical Support – IMS (Moderator)
- Brian Baker, IBM IMS
- Glenn Galler, IBM Advanced Technical Support - IMS
- Rich Lewis, IBM Advanced Technical Support - IMS
- Robert Magid, IBM IMS
- Dave Viguers, IBM IMS Development
- Suzette Wendler, IBM Advanced Technical Support - IMS
IMS Spotlight on IBM Research and Development:
Attendees were among the first to hear about future IMS technologies by attending the following IBM Spotlight sessions:
IMS - Somewhere Beyond the Moon Rich Lewis, IBM Advanced Technical Support, Americas Suzette Wendler, IBM Advanced Technical Support - IMS
IMS was introduced in 1968. It was originally designed as part of the NASA's Apollo Moon project. In the last 40 years it has evolved to meet the changing demands of a diverse set of users. Nevertheless, application programs written in the early days of IMS are still being used. Many of these programs are doing things that their creators did not imagine. Suzie and Rich will discuss how IMS has evolved and continues to evolve. They will provide illustrations from their personal experiences with IMS, describe how it integrates with emerging technologies, and provide insight into its future.
