Pre-Conference Educational Seminars

Attendees jump started their IDUG educational experience and got acquainted with other attendees during the pre-conference educational seminar(s). This year's conference offered nine full-day seminars presented by many of the world's foremost DB2 and IMS professionals. The following sessions were of particular interest to your job function:

SOA in the Real DB2 World
Robert Catterall, Catterall Consulting

High Performing SQL Clauses
Sheryl Larsen, Sheryl M. Larsen, Inc.

Getting Started wtih XML and DB2
Rav Ahuja, Matthias Nicola, and Guogen Zhang, IBM

An ALL NEW "Things I Wish They'd Told Me..."

Spotlight on IBM Research and Development

The following spotlights on future generations of DB2 for z/OS were featured:

IBM Data Studio - Improving Access to Databases
Curt Cotner, IBM Silicon Valley Lab

This session described the problems that IT organizations face when developing and supporting Java applications. We reviewed some of the key customer pain points that arise in these applications, and reviewed how IBM Data Studio addresses these issues. The presentation covered the pureQuery technology in IBM Data Studio that allows the DBA to track SQL applications from the database all the way back to the specific line of code in the Java application that invoked the SQL. The presentation included new IBM Data Studio features that ship in 2008 that provide similar capabilities for JDBC, .NET, and the popular open source Java frameworks (Spring, iBatis, and OpenJPA).

Ask an IBM Developer

IBM's leading engineers gathered to address challenges as data management professionals. The format of this meeting was very simple: Ask a question, receive an answer from some of IBM's top development minds and decision-makers.

Special Interest Groups

Attendes teamed up with peers, shared best practices, learned from subject-matter experts, and brainstormed solutions around a specialized area of interest through Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The following SIGs were offered at the conference:

  • DB2 Application Development: Mainframe, SOA, COBOL
  • DB2 Application Development: .Net, Java, PHP, and Ruby on Rails
  • DB2 Application Dvelopment: General (Trigger, SP, UDF, etc.)
