Paragraphs from the President
The International DB2 Users Group is so much more than an organization of DB2 users. IDUG is a community made up of several constituencies, each bringing a different focus and value to our organization. Sometimes IDUG's focus is on the roles our members play at work and the development of IDUG programs is done for the Application Developer, the DBA, the System Programmer, the System Administrator, and the BI/DW specialist. Sometimes IDUG's focus is on platforms, like Linux/Unix/Windows (LUW) and z/OS. But there are others. And even though you may only see these IDUG constituents at conferences and events, these individuals are an important part of what makes our organization such a success. From IBM to users, consultants to vendors, and IDUG Headquarters - IDUG is better for the work all these groups put into the organization, and our separate goals help make for the common good.
Here's a closer look at the categories that make up the IDUG community:
IBM - In a way, IBM enters into IDUG in two different ways: vendor of the DB2 Data Servers and again as a vendor for related products. In addition to DB2, the cornerstone of these related products include, for example: Rational Data Architect, Information Integrator, Data Studio, Tools and Utilities.
Users - IBM's DB2 Customers. The largest group of all, and the primary beneficiaries of all the training, networking, and technical knowledge provided by IDUG to make us all successful in using DB2.
Consultants - Providers of education and other services. At the risk of missing someone, some of these IDUG consultants include: Sheryl Larsen, Bonnie Baker, Julian Stuhler, Robert Catterall, Martin Hubel, Dave Beulke, Jan Henderyckx, Luc Vandaele, Jeremy Dodd, Susan Lawson, Dan Luksetich, Phil Gunning and more.
Vendors - Providers of valuable products and services, as well as education. Again, at the risk of missing someone, these vendors include: Ab Inito Software, Altova, Application Security, Inc., BMC, CA, Circle Computer Group, Ltd., Compuware, CPT Global, DBI, DataDirect Technologies, Embarcadero Technologies, Inc., E-Net Corporation, Four J's Development Tools, Inc., GoldenGate Software, Guardium, Gunning Technology Solutions, Helios & Matheson North America, HLS Technologies, Inc., IBM, it gain GmbH, Kazer Corporation, Neon Enterprise Software, Quest Software, Relational Architects International, Responsive Systems, SoftBase Systems, Software Engineering> - Germany, Software Product Research, SQData Corporation, TACT Software, Xkoto, Inc., and others. And, specializing in Education is Themis. (Many consultants and vendors also provide education along with products and services.)
IDUG Headquarters - SmithBucklin Corporation, for IDUG association management. SmithBucklin Corporation specializes in managing user groups, IDUG's back office, and also provides training in governance and due diligence.
These groups all have a vested interest in the success of IDUG. The independence of IDUG rests upon the needs of these individuals and companies that focus on success with DB2.
From Conferences and Events, to Premier and Basic Membership, to the IDUG Learning Center, IDUG Web site, DB2-L and more - IDUG continues to provide you, the DB2 professional, with a community for networking, and the technical knowledge to effectively utilize DB2!
All the best,
Bernie O'Connor
President, IDUG - International DB2 Users Group

Taming a 1 Terabyte Table!
When table size gets in the Terabyte range a number of issues arise. Doing maintenance (runstats, reorg, backup, restore, etc) on the objects can be quite tricky. Getting good performance on queries of the table can be very difficult. The DBA must use all the tools at their disposal to solve the maintenance issues and performance issues.

e-Tip
Information on How the Stored Procedure sysproc.am_get_lock_chns Can Be Used to Get the Lock Chains in a Lock Wait Situation.
e-Tip Submitter: Srinivasa Inaganti
If you have a lock wait situation you can use the following stored procedure to view the lockchains DB2 call sysproc.am_get_lock_chns(15,?) 15 in the above call statement stands for application handle. Output would look like 15 --> 11 --> 7 It implies that 15 is waiting for 11 which in turn is waiting for 7.
